A man is in critical condition after deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office responded to an armed attempted suicide call on Tuesday.

Investigators said deputies arrived on scene at Maddison Road in unincorporated Delray Beach around 9:36 p.m. When they arrived, they found 37-year-old Nitin Mathew threatening to stab his mother and commit suicide.

Authorities say the deputies tried to defuse the situation, but shot Mathew in the shoulder when he grabbed his mother and threatened her during the de-escalation attempt.

Mathew's mother was struck in the elbow by the bullet.

Mathew and his mother were both taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
