David Dorn’s killer sentenced to life in prison

ST. LOUIS – A Glasgow Village man convicted of murdering a retired St. Louis Police Captain was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

Sentencing for Stephan Cannon was set for 10:00 a.m. in Division 13. He was sentenced to life without parole for first-degree murder, a combined 15 years in prison for three counts of armed criminal action, 10 years in prison for first-degree robbery, and five years in prison for first-degree burglary. He will serve these sentences consecutively.

Cannon was found guilty in July. The jury convicted Cannon after only three hours of deliberations.

77-year-old David Dorn was shot and killed in June 2020. Dorn had responded to a burglar alarm at a friend’s business, Lee’s Pawn and Jewelry, on Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. When he arrived, Dorn confronted looters who had broken into the store in the aftermath of a George Floyd protest.

Police said Cannon fired ten shots at Dorn during the confrontation. Dorn was hit four times and died from the injuries. Dorn spent 43 years in law enforcement. He was a longtime St. Louis Police Department Captain. Before retiring, he was the chief of the Moline Acres Police Department.

Dorn’s widow, Ann Dorn, told us after the verdict that her husband would have helped Cannon, but he never had the opportunity to before he was shot.

“For the young man to not even give Dave a chance you know to talk to him, to just shoot him for no reason,” Dorn said. “Once he retired as a policeman, I never thought I’d ever get that knock on the door. I’m not going to let his memory die. I’m going to carry his name on in helping first responders and try and get the respect back.”

In that same interview, Dorn shared that she feels for Cannon’s mother and his family.
