GRAY (WGME) -- It may not be the busiest intersection in Maine, but people who live in Gray say it certainly feels like it.
Just off the Gray turnpike exit, five major highways cut right through downtown Gray, including Routes 100 and 202.
Parents say there is so much traffic that many families don't feel safe crossing the street.
Now, the town has a plan in the works to narrow some of streets and pedestrian crossings, as well as redirecting some of the truck traffic.
Some businesses in downtown Gray are all for it.
"I think it would be great to clean it up, especially for pedestrians, for locals to cross the intersection, get to local shopping centers," Gray businessman Josh Allen said. "There's so many local shops around here that people can travel to on foot. There's not really that means right now with how busy this local intersection is."
Town leaders also hope to slow traffic, add new sidewalks and bury utility lines at the busy downtown intersections.
Because these are state roads, the town must work with the Maine Department of Transportation to try to implement these changes.
