In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the community is coming together to honor victims and provide resources for those in need.
Red Bluff is no exception, as the organization Empower Tehama is holding their tenth annual candlelight walk.
This event is to shine light on those impacted by domestic violence. The walk will begin the night at the old courthouse lawn in downtown Red Bluff.
Candlesticks and glowsticks will be provided to those who join in on the walk for awareness on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
Executive Director of Empower Tehama, Michaele Brown, says:
Tehama County has twice the national average number of calls placed in our domestic violence hotline, so that says a lot about the prevalence about domestic violence in the community. And, I think, it's also important to understand that domestic violence is not just an issue that affects woman, but that men can be affected as well.
They will be having two victims of domestic violence share their stories, both a male and a female.
Brown also mentioned that domestic violence can be a rather invisible problem, according to empower Tehama the following may be signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship with your partner:
- Physically harms you in any way
- Refuses to communicate with you , or does so in a harmful, disrespectful, or threatening way
- GPS tracks your cell phone or looks through your phone frequently
- Constantly texts you or makes you feel like you cant be separated from phone out of fear
- Isolates you from your friends or family
- Pressures you into activities
- Has control over your finances or withholds money from you
- Sends insulting or threatening messages or social media posts
There are many local resources and agencies available, Empower Tehama provides a 24-Hour Crisis Hotline at 530-528-0226 (or Toll Free: 1-800-324-6473).
The national domestic violence hotline is also available 24-hours at 800-799-7233 with many language options.
