Drivers traveling along I-85 southbound at the Pelham Road exit will see lane changes by the end of the week.
Weather permitting, this Friday, crews will switch all southbound lanes of traffic on I-85 after the Pelham Road exit to the new Rocky Creek Bridge, according to SCDOT.
The switch will allow contractors to continue lane expansion work on I-85 and will last for at least a year, SCDOT officials said.
There will still be three lanes of traffic in each direction as crews work.
That section by the Pelham Road exit can already be a headache for drivers headed to Greenville.
“I see them doing a little construction but it’s the same thing. Cars going slow but then when you get back to the (Pelham Road) exit, it seems to pick up. I don’t know what’s going on,” said driver Bill Watts.
At certain times, the delays back up into Spartanburg County.
“I would say like 15 miles away from Pelham’s exit, it’s that bad,” said Logan Stafford, a driver who commutes from Spartanburg. “We always spend (about) an hour in traffic.”
The project began in July 2021 and when it is finished in the Spring of 2024, I-85 in both directions will have four lanes.
