The likely incoming Baltimore City State’s Attorney said he would prosecute all laws, when asked whether he will prosecute those who violate a new law aimed to crack down on street/stunt racing and dirt bike riding.
From inside City Hall on Monday, Mayor Brandon Scott signed the Obstructing Street-Racing/Stunt Driving legislation into law.
This new law allows stiffer penalties for those involved in street racing, shutting down intersections and/or caught riding on dirt bikes throughout the city. Specifically, up to a $1,000 fine and 12 months in jail, if convicted of the misdemeanor charge.
"If it does continue there will be enforcement action taken,” said Baltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer, who introduced the bill.
"We need to make sure that people are held accountable,” said Councilman Zeke Cohen, in support of the legislation.
FOX45 News reached out to the incoming city state’s attorney and asked Ivan Bates if he will prosecute those who violate this law.
Bates sent a statement that reads:
“As State’s Attorney, I look forward to working with our public safety partners to build credible cases to prosecute all laws in Baltimore City."
FOX45 News also reached out to the Baltimore Police Department and asked,
Is this a law the Baltimore Police Department is ready and prepared to enforce?
Has the Commissioner alerted district commanders of this new law and instructed officers in how to respond?
A spokesperson wrote: “BPD is ready and prepared to enforce the new law when it goes into effect and will provide proper guidance to officers in accordance with the law.”
The new law goes into effect in 30 days.
