A Fort Collins police detective was seriously injured while working undercover in Loveland last week.

On Sept. 29, undercover Fort Collins police detectives in plain clothes were following up on a previous case in the area of North Boise Avenue and East Eighth Street in east Loveland about 8 p.m., according to a news release from Fort Collins Police Services.

Detectives were approached by an acquaintance of the suspect in the case they were investigating, and the man confronted and punched one of the detectives, knocking them unconscious, Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesperson David Moore said in an email to the Coloradoan on Tuesday.

The Critical Incident Response Team is investigating this incident. The Loveland Police Department is the lead investigative agency, and the sheriff's office will release information related to the case.

The detective was transported to the hospital for treatment of their serious injuries and is expected to recover, according to the police department news release. The detective remained in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon, Moore said.

Moore said no weapons were involved, no police officers used force and no one else was injured.

The man who is accused of punching the detective was detained and interviewed by CIRT investigators at the Loveland Police Department, then released pending further investigation, according to the news release.

Moore said no one had been arrested or charged as of Tuesday.

The 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office will determine if anyone should be criminally charged.

While CIRT most commonly investigates police shootings or incidents in which police use force, Moore said this case meets the definition of a critical incident the team would investigate because it involved a law enforcement employee and someone was seriously injured.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident can contact Loveland Police Detective Corey Richards at 970-962-2274.
