Wizard named SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Betsy Wizard was named the SEC Freshman Swimmer of the Week, the league office announced today. It is the first SEC honor for Wizard, and it also marked the first SEC honor for the Hogs this season.

It’s Arkansas’ first weekly SEC award since Andrea Sansores won Swimmer of the Week on Dec. 7, 2021, and the team’s first Freshman of the Week since Vanessa Hermann on Jan. 22, 2019.

Betsy finished almost two seconds faster than the reigning SEC Champion Morgan Scott in the 200 freestyle event in the team’s meet against Alabama on Sept. 30. Her time of 1:46.35 is also the fastest time in the nation in the 200 freestyle event, which is also an NCAA B-Cut time.

Betsy put up a 53.47 in the 100-butterfly event — also an NCAA B-Cut time — and the fourth-fastest time in the nation. In the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay, she had a split time of 48.88 that helped Arkansas secure a win. The Hogs’ 3:17.82 is currently the fastest time in the nation.

“I’m very happy that Betsy has adjusted well to Razorback Life! She has been coachable, positive, and working hard every day with her teammates,” said head coach Neil Harper. “We had several teammates record the fastest times in their events in the country, so Betsy (200 free), Vanessa (100 breast), Luciana (200 fly), and the 200 medley and 400 free relays made a statement for our team: That we can work hard in the pool and the weight-room, get excited about hosting a top 5 nationally-ranked team in Alabama, and make a good account of ourselves this early in the season!”

Wizard and the Razorbacks are next in action against the Liberty Flames on Nov. 4, 2022, at the Arkansas Natatorium in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
