Watch Doja Cat Get Into Her Wild Look for the Balenciaga Show

When Doja Cat appeared at Balenciaga’s spring 2023 show in Paris this past weekend, the rapper certainly stood out among the star-studded crowd: She hit the front row with a black eye-inspired makeup look. “This is my first fashion week, so I’m having a great time—but it’s definitely kicking my ass,” Doja tells Vogue. “I wanted to do something where I have a black eye, split nose, and split lip. But my lashes are really pretty—we made it glam at the same time.”

Shortly before show time, Doja took Vogue inside her hotel room to share her getting-ready process in a brand new video. Pre-glam routine, she started her morning by having a croissant—a Paris must!—and learning a bit of French. Rather, correcting her French. “The other day I wanted to say ‘I’m so excited,’ so I said, ‘Je suit excité,’” says Doja. “And someone said, ‘That means, I’m horny. I was like, ‘Oh no, I’ve been saying that for months!’”

After breakfast, it was time for her glam team to get work on her beauty look for the show. Hairstylist J Stay Ready had already given Doja a bleach blonde buzzcut just a day prior. “You’ve been wanting to shave your head since I met you, I just wouldn’t let you—but I’m so happy we did,” the hairstylist adds. Makeup artist Sophia Sinot then started applying Dojo’s faux scrapes and cuts with makeup; the star sees fashion and beauty as performance art. “I like a performance when it’s not on stage—it’s really fun,” she says. “When I shaved off my eyebrows, that allowed me to create a canvas for other incredible makeup artists. Life is too short to have the same hair and face every day for the rest of your life.”

Once glam was finished, stylist Brett Alan Nelson dressed the rapper in her look for the event: Balenciaga’s sleek, black off-the-shoulder dress. “I love [it] because it’s really buildable and simple,” says Doja. They went bolder with the accessories, which included extra-pointy heels, black gloves, chunky silver jewelry, and sporty shades (would it be a Balenciaga look without it?). After a quick photo shoot in her hotel room, the star was then off to her party bus and made her way to the show—where the paparazzi proceeded to go wild.
