Nobody Loves a Boiler Suit More Than Gigi Hadid
On paper, a boiler suit sounds like an easy thing to wear this fall. You slip on the utilitarian one-piece, and voila, you’re instantly dressed! But turns out, there’s an art to styling the boxy staple—and model Gigi Hadid has all the tips and tricks. Over the past few years, the catwalk star has been wearing them nonstop, always making them feel polished and fashion-forward despite their more rugged, car mechanic-esque feel.
Hadid’s love of boiler suits can be traced as far back as 2018, around the time her modeling career truly began skyrocketing. That year, she was spotted at the Brandon Maxwell show in the label’s satiny-pink boiler suit—a more glamorous take on the look, right down to the platform sneakers. Since then, she’s worn an array of boiler suits in different hues—from pristine whites, to colorful yellows and deep burgundys. Her styling trick seems to be to choose a style that has a cinced waist or belt detail, giving the piece some shape. Occasionally, she’s also rolled up the sleeves or embraced cropped pant hemlines, to show a little more skin.
Her accessories have also helped make it feel more fashion week-ready. In 2019, for one, she paired her white boiler with a pair of leather opera gloves. Just this past week during Paris Fashion Week, she styled her yellow jumpsuit with a tiny floral shoulder bag and leopard-print shoes, for a dash of pattern clashing. Think of the boiler suit, then, as a blank canvas—something to pile your favorite accessories on. Like Hadid, just make sure the fit is more fashion, less function.
