DIXON, Ill. — A man will receive the maximum prison sentence allowable after pleading guilty to shooting at an Illinois high school graduation practice several years ago.
It happened in 2018 at Dixon High School in Lee County, Illionis.
Matthew Milby Jr. has been in state custody ever since the shooting and went before a judge for sentencing on Tuesday.
There was early speculation about whether Milby might speak prior to receiving his sentence, but after roughly two hours, Judge John Redington reportedly handed down an effective 30 year sentence for Milby Jr.
He received 30 years on the charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm toward a police officer and 30 years for aggravated discharge of a firearm in a school.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the court dismissed all other charges against him including attempted murder.
Milby will get 1,061 days of credit for time already served.
Under the state’s Truth In Sentencing Law, he’ll be forced to serve out 85-percent of his prison term concurrently before being eligible for parole, meaning he’s likely to serve roughly 25 and a half years before going before the state’s parole board.
