The Redding Fire Department says big topics they expect to talk about Tuesday night are protecting your home from a fire and new staffing.

REDDING, Calif. - Across the country, local law enforcement agencies and fire are working to improve their relationships in their community. National Night Out provides an opportunity for just that.

The Redding Fire Department says big topics they expect to talk about Tuesday night are protecting your home from a fire and new staffing.

National Night Out in Redding

Redding Fire engine companies attended many neighborhood gatherings to share fire safety tips during a National Night Out in August. The department received a thank you letter along with this picture.

Newly promoted Redding Fire Marshal Patrick O'Connor said there's a lot happening with the fire department that they want people to know about but most importantly the department wants the community to feel comfortable asking questions if they have them.

“It’s an exciting time for us to really provide that information and get out there and interact with our citizens, the people we serve on a daily basis," O'Connor added. "It’s a good opportunity for us to reach out to the citizens of Redding and really interact and be a source of information for them.”

He said the number one focus of the department right now is being able to grow as the City of Redding is growing. Recently, the City has been able to staff three firefighters per engine, the most the most staffing they have ever had but they are looking at more on the prevention side.

The issue of large homeless encampments that pose potential fire and safety concerns is one area specifically that could use prevention resources. It's also a topic both firefighters and police say is of interest.

He said they will have information for homeowners who "have some concerns of the topics coming up that are directly related to fire issues and police issues that are happening in our communities.”

Redding Fire will also have tips for homeowners who want more information on how to protect their homes.

Here is a map of participating locations.

RPD, RFD, and city officials will be out in Redding neighborhoods between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Block parties usually start between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. There will be barbecues, ice cream socials, or potluck style gatherings, whatever your neighborhood has chosen to do.

Make sure to turn on your outside lights!
