GARY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The mayor of Gary is trying to reassure residents after four recent murders.

“This is not Gary, and it certainly is not who we are,”  Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said.

Prince is clearly concerned about image and he said it’s important to point out that the murders were not random, and they were not drug or gang-related.

“As we live here and as residents of (the) city, we do everything in our efforts to make sure that its a safe city. And, understanding that safe is a matter of perspective, when you consider that these incidents were in many ways somewhat isolated, we still believe we’re headed in the right direction,” the mayor added.

Those murdered include two juveniles, boys, 14 and 16, shot to death at the same time.

Also, a 50-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man. Three were separate incidents.

“I want to assure the public that the Gary Police Department and Metro Homicide Division and all our partners, both federally and locally, are working very hard to provide closure to all these cases,” Gary Police Chief Brian Evans said.

There have been 52 murders in Gary so far this year. There were a total of 48 for all of last year.
