INDIANAPOLIS — From the sounds of it, Jonathan Taylor is going to use every second of time available before making any decisions on his sprained right ankle for Thursday night’s game against the Denver Broncos.

The Colts’ star running back has never missed a game due to injury, not at any level.

Taylor was at the team’s walk-through practice Tuesday, but he was not participating in the team’s warmups. The running back wore a protective boot on his right foot, a boot he hadn’t worn during his interview with local media earlier in the day.

“I definitely want to use as much time as I can in order to get treatment and get feeling as well as possible before I try to make any decisions,” said Taylor. “Especially on a short week. On a normal week, you’ve kind of got a lot of time. I’m just trying to push as much treatment as I can.”

Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard (31) works to bring down Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor (28) on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, during a game against the Tennessee Titans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis is preparing for the possibility of playing.

“We’ve got a plan if he does play,” Colts head coach Frank Reich said. “We’ll be ready for that, obviously. Hope he can play, but still no status yet.”

Taylor clearly has his sights set on playing.

He has missed only one game in his NFL career, a COVID-19 close contact in his rookie season, and he is fanatical about his offseason preparation, trying to do anything he can to avoid injury.

“I definitely do plan to play, but if you can’t go, you can’t go,” Taylor said. “That’s why you’ve got to get as much treatment as you can.”

Taylor has also been battling a turf toe injury that forced him to miss the first practice of his NFL career last week.

But he downplayed the toe’s impact.

“I’m definitely still dealing with that, but it’s in a good spot right now,” Taylor said. “The No. 1 thing right now is getting that ankle back right, 100%.”

Taylor’s availability may come down to a game-time decision after warming up Thursday night.

“You want to use as much time as possible to see how much we can push this, how much we can get feeling back on our feet, back to 100%,” Taylor said. “On a short week, you’ve got to use all the time that you have.”

If Taylor can play, the Indianapolis medical staff believes there is a low risk of making the sprain worse.

“I don’t think we’re in that category,” Reich said. “From what I understand, from the discussions I’ve had with the doctors and our trainers, that’s not a concern at this point. He’s not ready to go right now, but we’ll see if he’s ready to go on Thursday night.”
