Kansas City highway reopens after police chase, crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police closed part of a Kansas City-area highway for about 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon after police tried to stop a suspected carjacking suspect.

Kansas City police said they received information that a purple Dodge Challenger connected to an armed robbery and carjacking in Kansas City, Kansas, could be in south Kansas City.

The department said officers spotted the car in question on 71 Highway near Bannister Road.

Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver of the Challenger hit a black GMC Yukon as it tried to pass the SUV on the highway. The impact of the collision forced the SUV into another lane of traffic and caused it to hit a Chevrolet Equinox.

Police said the impact caused the driver of the Equinox to lose control, hit the concrete wall of a bridge and overturn onto its roof.

The driver of the Challenger left the scene of the crash, but has since been arrested, according to police.

No one was seriously injured in the crash.
