HURON — The Huron City Commission approved the purchase of three police cruisers in total Monday night during the commission meeting through two different items.
The first item was a bid quote on two new police cruisers through Iverson Auto of Huron with the intention to have the vehicles delivered in mid- to late-2023. The two vehicles were quoted at $77,264, leaving $17,736 remaining in the 2023 police vehicle budget to equip the cruisers for police use once they arrive. This was approved.
The second item was to replace a police cruiser deemed a total loss after a recent collision while on duty. The insurance replacement cost for the vehicle was more than $61,000, but finding a vehicle that is ready and equipped is extremely difficult. One was found in Arizona, and staff will travel to pick the vehicle up and drive it back to Huron. This was approved.
The meeting opened with Mayor Gary Harrington recognizing Fire Chief Ron Hines as part of Fire Prevention Week October 9-15. Due to the Native American Day holiday, there will be no meeting next week, so Mayor Harrington read the proclamation for the week at Monday evening’s meeting.
Commissioners approved the purchase of a wide area mower for the airport through RDO Equipment of Aberdeen through Minnesota bid. The quote for the mower was $63,304.02, falling under the budget of $70,000.
Commissioners also approved a final payment to Top Grade Concrete LLC for concrete work in the city. The final payment request was in the amount of $116,233.90, which included a net increase of $2,007.
City attorney Tucker Volesky presented a lease to the commission regarding a go-cart track. He explained that he had cleaned up language in the lease regarding insurance and requiring contact information of the lessee. This was approved.
Volesky also presented the second reading of Ordinance 2240-23-407 regarding zoning of nonconforming structures and off-street parking in the downtown area. This was approved.
Commissioners also:
• Approved a raffle for the Huron Get Fit Committee for Oct. 26 at the Huron Event Center.
• Approved the transfer of Isaiah Decker to Park Maintenance.
• Approved the hire of Keri Hjellum for Solid Waste Maintenance I position.
The commission completed the meeting with a work session led by Mike Harrison regarding code enforcement in the city.
The city commission will not meet and city offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 10, in observance of Native American Day.
The Solid Waste Department rubble site will be closed Oct. 10, and Monday’s garbage, recycling, and grass will be collected on Wed., Oct. 12 due to Native American Day.
