Cincinnati man sentenced to 37 months in connection to Oakley IHOP shooting
A Cincinnati man has been sentenced to 37 months in prison in U.S. District Court on charges stemming from his illegal possession of a firearm used during a shootout outside of a restaurant.The Department of Justice says Gionni Dews, 23, has been sentenced after possessing a pistol that had been converted into an automatic weapon, which he used in self-defense during a shooting at the Oakley IHOP in November of 2021.DOJ says Dews took the gun to the restaurant, where he worked, and got in a physical altercation with a co-worker that evening.Officials say about 15 minutes after the initial altercation, a man confronted Dews and allegedly began shooting at him, hitting Dews in the leg.Authorities say Dews ran away while shooting back toward the other man, with some rounds hitting the restaurant. DOJ says a friend of Dews arrived at the establishment in an SUV, which picked him up and led police on a high-speed chase onto I-71 before the car's driver swerved into a guardrail as the car exited the expressway.At this point, officials say, Dews threw the gun, which was still loaded, out of the passenger window.Dews was indicted by a federal grand jury in January of 2022 and pled guilty in March to illegally possessing a machine gun.
