Isn't OJ's daily show from Manchester, that's outside London? He's always banging on about being on the Salford Riviera. Not sure how 4am is any more prime time than Midnight.

Obviously it’s a start of moving shows from London to save studio space and cost cutting exercise.

I don’t see how doing a show from Cardiff is a cost cutting exercise-more part of the BBC’s policy have having more programmes produced from different areas of the UK-these phases come and go-like overnight shows were all from Pebble Mill Birmingham for some years.

Cost of living lower in Cardiff so staff costs (Producers, presenter) will be lower, Owain will be cheaper than Vannessa or another London based presenter would be.

Agreed, he presumably doesn't want to move to London and that fits nicely with Tim Davie's strategy to do more network shows from the nations and regions. It's nothing to do with cost cutting.

BBC Radio 2 is the biggest station in South Wales (by some distance) but it has been noted by the Senedd culture committee that there are very few Welsh voices on there (just Cerys Matthews?). This should help to address that.

It's not necessarily cheaper as they might not be working on just one show. They could have a broadcast assistant that works on Early Breakfast and stays on to Breakfast. They can't do that if they're in Cardiff

However in this case it's irrelevant as it's going to be an indie production, not a BBC one so no-one working on the programme will be employed by the BBC

How is this saving studio space? The studios will be there anyway for other presenters.

It's not a BBC production though so these costs don't come into it.

The cost saving of staff around the country is minimal really. Early Breakfast wouldn't exactly have a big team.evenmif it was a BBC show. The biggest cost is nearly always the presenter and on radio 2 they're just as expensive. I can't imagine them saying 'Owain, we were gonna pay you 1300 quid a show but we want you to do.it in Wales so we'll only pay you a grand a show.

Not ex R1 DJ either if you look at recruits to weekdays in recent years; Scott, Sara, Zoe, Chris, Simon, Jo, Trevor all ex Radio 1 so not going after another of their ex presenters is an unusual move.

Guess ex R1 DJs probably higher profile so would be unlikely to want a 4am slot.

There are plenty of experienced commercial DJs who'd kill for a 4am Radio 2 slot though.

Would they want to leave Commercial Radio for BBC who’s career might be short lived. Possibly Owain is the target audience which was monitored during the time he was covering.

How secure do you actually think commercial radio is?.Come on if you were offered a slot on Radio 2 you wouldn’t say no on the basis it might be short-lived-you’d jump at it!.

It seems the way things are these days, as long as Owain is a) good at his job, and b) doesn't earn more than he's happy for everyone to know about, he could have a long career at the Beeb.

He's done a few according to the radio today article, not sure how high profile he was. With a 20 year career behind him he's not exactly inexperienced.
