PORTAGE PARK — Residents who live in the 38th Ward may get some answers about the city’s response to massive flooding last month at an upcoming community meeting.
Ald. Nick Sposato (38th) is hosting a public meeting 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Portage Park Senior Center, 5431 W. Berteau Ave. to discuss flood mitigation strategies.
Representatives from the city’s Department of Water Management and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District will be in attendance to answer resident questions, Sposato said in his recent newsletter.
Other Northwest Side state officials are co-hosting the meeting.
People can enter through the Portage Park parking lot. Sposato asks only one person per family attend the meeting due to limited space.
Earlier this month, the North and Northwest sides of the city were hit by a “supercell” storm that dumped 4-6 inches of rain and caused heavy flooding. It damaged basements, as well as water and sewer systems, flooded streets and backed up the city’s 311 line, which fielded thousands of calls from residents.
Some residents have said they were disappointed by how the city responded to the torrential downpour. Experts said the geysers that erupted during the storm were caused by air trapped in the sewers during the heavy rains. Other local officials have also hosted meetings with the community to alleviate concerns and discuss strategies in place for future floods.
