Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi responds to possible 60th anniversary return

Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has responded to a possible return for the show's 60th anniversary.

Incoming showrunner Russell T Davies has already confirmed David Tennant will be part of next year's festivities, along with new Doctor actor Ncuti Gatwa.

Many fans will surely want to see Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor for this special occasion, but he recently told SFX Magazine he's never been in favour of multi-Doctor episodes.

"It's very hard to imagine how you'd get a decent crack of the whip when there's 14 of you, you know? So I think I'd rather leave it as is, because I loved my time on Doctor Who and loved doing it," he said.

"I don't want to be Doctor Who's assistant. It used to drive me insane on Doctor Who, not being able to talk about anything. It's like, 'Who cares?!' But then I get into trouble."

Capaldi does have experience with multi-Doctor stories, having briefly appeared in the 50th anniversary special and shared the screen with the First Doctor in his own final episode.

Not all of Capaldi's predecessors feel the same way he does. Matt Smith recently said "no one's picked up the phone" to ask him to return as 11, but he wouldn't rule it out.

Before the 60th anniversary, Jodie Whittaker will say goodbye to the TARDIS in BBC centenary special 'The Power of the Doctor', featuring returning companions Tegan and Ace, The Master, the Daleks, the Cybermen and, we're sure, many other surprises.

Doctor Who's next special premieres in October 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams exclusively on BritBox in the UK.
