Man Shot Dead After Confronting Men Who Dropped Off Stepdaughters: Police

A man has been shot dead after he got into a confrontation with two males who dropped off his stepdaughters outside his Texas home, according to police.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) was first alerted to reports of a shooting at the 13700 block of Spectacled Bear Lane, in Crosby, at about 11 p.m. on Sunday.

When officers arrived, they found Kevin Adams, 48, had suffered a gunshot injury to his back and arranged for him to be transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to NBC affiliate KPRC-TV.

Adams was pronounced dead after he arrived at the hospital, investigators told the network.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S, 164 people have been fatally shot in Texas since September 1.

The shooting happened after Adams' stepdaughters, aged 16 and 17, arrived home with two males.

Deputies told KPRC-TV that Adams went outside to confront the two males and that there had been ongoing issues between him and one of them who dropped off his teenage stepdaughters.

Police said Adams and the men got into a physical altercation during which one of them shot the stepfather.

The network reported the two suspects then fled in a white Impala while the stepdaughters remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Officers told the KPRC-TV they were did not know what the relationship between the suspects and Adams was.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the HCSO or Crime Stoppers of Houston.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Texas led the nation in gun deaths with 4,164 in 2020.

But its overall firearm-involved death rate per 100,000 people at 14.2 puts it at 26th in the nation.

In September, a teenager died after being shot while he tried to prank his friend at a home north of Houston, according to police.

When HSCO investigators arrived, they found Dominique McCoy, 17, in the bathroom with a gunshot wound.

Following the shooting Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted: "McCoy was visiting the home. The suspected shooter, identified as Reginald Smalls, 17, resides at the location. Smalls claimed that McCoy had startled him inside the home, causing him to shoot him.

"Manslaughter charges were filed against Smalls. Charges of tampering with evidence were also filed on another individual who was staying at the home, Lekedrick Bowden, 18."

During a bond hearing, a judge said McCoy had been hiding in the bathroom and jumped out to scare Smalls in a joking way.
