Clinton County will have 29 polling sites come November, but they'll need more helping hands, as volunteer rates have declined since 2020.

Brandi Lloyd, the deputy commissioner at the Clinton County Board of Elections, stated that once the pandemic hit, quite a few people retired and chose that, "they were OK not working anymore."

Another reason for the loss of poll workers, especially for older volunteers, was the county's desire to switch using new technology like iPads and tablets.

While the board says the switch has made their process more efficient, they also believe it's turned away those who were used to working with the traditional paper poll books.

But Patty Liflim was not one of those people. Even though she's been retired, she's been volunteering as a poll worker for the last five years. In fact, this year, she was promoted as the head coordinator for Beekmantown, New York's polling site.

One of her favorite parts is just catching up with old friends.

"I like seeing the people," shared Liflim. "People I haven't seen for a year or so saying hello and making sure people are voting correctly."

Volunteering at the polls also comes with its perks, like getting a behind-the-scenes look into the process.

"You kind of 'pull back the curtain' if you will on what happens on Election Day," said Brandi Lloyd. "You see all the work that goes into getting the data in there."

One of the areas the Board of Elections also stressed was safety. That's something they say is always their No. 1 concern.

"We have precautions in place," said Lloyd, "and are in constant contact with the state board as well as the federal government."

"If there is a threat we need to take seriously, we will," Lloyd emphasized.

In Patty's five years of volunteering, it's never been something she's been concerned with and has always felt "very safe."

"We've really had no big incidents or anything, even when we had the presidential election a few years ago. Everyone looks out for everybody."

To qualify to volunteer, you just need to be a registered voter in Clinton County.

Clinton County is seeking volunteers for both early voting as well as Election Day on Nov. 8.

The pay range varies between $130-250 depending on how long the day is. Paid training is also included.
