LANSING (WWJ) - One man is dead in Lansing after officials say he allegedly fired on officers early Tuesday morning and officers fired back, fatally striking him.

Chief Ellery Sosebee with the Lansing Police Department said authorities are still investigating, but according to preliminary reports, the incident first began just before 1 a.m. on the city's south side near I-496 and Olds Avenue.

It escalated from there.

"At apporximently 12:48 last night, officers responded to a call for shots fired in the 2000 block of Malcom X," Sosebee said. "Officers identified the house involved and located several stolen vehicles at the residence."

Sosebee said officers were able to obtain a search warrant for the property around 5:15 a.m. when they were met by a man in the home.

"While making contact, officers encountered a male subject with the residence who threatened them with a weapon," the chief said. "Officers tried to deescalate the situation and retreated to the street for cover."

According to Sosebee, the officers were fired on from the home while they continued to negotiate.

"At some point, the accused exited the residence firing at officers," the chief added. "Officers then returned fire, striking the accused."

Police were able to secure the area and the firearm while rendering aid to the man -- he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The investigation has been handed over to the Michigan State Police. Authorities said information about the case is subject to change as the investigation moves forward.

The streets in the area of Malcolm X and Buffalo Street are still closed at this hour while authorities work the scene -- police have asked travelers to stay clear of the area and seek alternative routes.

Authorities did not release any other details, but more information will be released as it becomes available.
