It’s a big day and night for Norwalk athletics Tuesday as the Warrior boys golf team looks to qualify for state and the volleyball team tries to lock up a conference championship in a brand new gymnasium.

The Norwalk boys golfers are in Council Bluffs today for the Class 4A District Tournament at Bent Tree Golf Club. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m. with 14 teams competing for the right to advance to the 4A State Tournament later this week at Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids.

Today’s top three team finishers will advance to the state meet along with the top two individuals (plus ties) from non-qualifying teams. Norwalk enters the day with the fifth-best 18-hole average among teams in their district.

Tonight at 7:15, the Warrior volleyball team will host Indianola in the first-ever game held inside Norwalk’s new PE and Competition Center. It is also Pink Out Night.

Norwalk, ranked ninth in Class 4A, is 16-6 overall and 5-0 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The Warriors can clinch their first-ever conference volleyball title with a victory, but it won’t be easy as the 4A fifth-ranked Indians enter the contest at 23-6 overall and 4-1 in league play.

First-year Norwalk head coach John Fulton says his team is looking forward to opening the new NPECC tonight, but even more excited about the opportunity in front of them.

“Indianola has been a good volleyball team for a very long time,” Fulton said. “That’s kind of the standard in the conference and we’d like to think that we’re right up there with them, so that will be a good challenge for us and we’re excited for that. It’s kind of been a goal to compete in the conference and to win it. We have a chance to do that on Tuesday.”

An Indianola win tonight would force a first-place tie in the Little Hawkeye with one conference match remaining for each team.
