Greg Lage, a beloved teacher and coach at Ankeny High, is fighting for survival after a serious biking accident in Des Moines early Saturday morning.
His wife, Mindy Myers-Lage, says her husband could have died but for two police officers who found him bleeding and unconscious near Birdland Marina.
Lage remains in critical condition in an intensive care unit.
At school, word of his accident spread quickly Monday, if not over the weekend.
"I was really distraught about what happened because he is such a great teacher, and I had such a fun time being his student last year in U.S. History," said Nick Harrison, a senior. "He really goes out of the way to make class fun and make sure the kids are learning."
Lage enjoyed biking both to school and his one-a-week shift at a speakeasy in downtown Des Moines.
On his ride home early Saturday morning, it's believed he hit something that resulted in the serious crash.
An online fundraiser is quickly generating a lot of donations for his medical care.
