ANDREW STEVENS. STACEY, THIS IS THE ROUTE GREG LAGE TAKES TO GET HOME NOW. ONE AT A WEEK. HE WORKS A SHIFT AT A SPEAKEASY IN DOWNTOWN DES MOINES SATURDAY MORNING. HE WAS MAKING THIS CORNER WHEN HE HAD AN ACCIDENT THAT NEARLY TOOK HIS LIFE. THIS PICTURE OF GREG LAGE REVEALS A LOT ABOUT HIM ON HIS BIKE. HAPPY AND WEARING A HELMET. THIS IS A ROUTE HE’S TAKEN COUNTLESS TIMES. HE BIKES TO BOTH JOBS WHENEVER HE CAN, BUT SATURDAY MORNING HE APPARENTLY HIT SOMETHING AND FELL, CAUSING A SEVERE CUT UNDER HIS HELMET. HE WAS KNOCKED OUT IMMEDIATE, EARLY AND MAY HAVE DIED. BUT FOR TWO POLICE OFFICERS OFF THEIR NORMAL ROUTE WHO HAPPENED TO SEE THE BIKE. WORD SPREAD QUICKLY AT ANKENY HIGH SCHOOL, WHERE HE HAS TAUGHT MORE THAN 20 YEARS. I WAS REALLY DISTRAUGHT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A GREAT TEACHER AND I’VE HAD SUCH A FUN TIME BEING A STUDENT LAST YEAR AND IN US HISTORY AND HE REALLY GOES OUT OF THE WAY TO MAKE CLASS FUN AND MAKE SURE THAT KIDS ARE LEARNING. BRENDAN STEUBEN HAS LAGE AS A SOCCER COACH. I ENJOY HAVING HIM AS A COACH. HE IS A FUN PERSON TO BE AROUND. HE LIGHTENS UP THE MOOD WHEREVER HE GOES. ONE WAY STUDENTS ARE TRYING TO HELP IS BY SHARING AN ONLINE FUNDRAISER, WHICH IS QUICKLY GETTING A LOT OF DONATIONS. IT REALLY WAS A MIRACLE. I MEAN, LIKE, FROM WHAT I HEARD, THE COPS WERE OFF OF THEIR ROUTE WHEN THEY FOUND HIM. IT SERENDIPITY, I GUESS, BUT YEAH, IT WAS SOMETHING ELSE. LEACH’S FAMILY SAYS HE’S IN CRITICAL CONDITION IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, BUT THEY REMAIN HOPEFUL AND SO DO STUDENTS. HE’S VERY ICONIC, VERY WELL KNOWN, VERY LOVED. EVERYONE IS THINKING ABOUT HIM RIGHT NOW. WHILE GREG HAS NOT WOKEN UP, HIS WIFE SAYS SHE IS PLAYING HIS FAVORITE SONGS IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM. WE’RE LIVE TONIGHT IN DES MOINES. ANDREW MOLLENBECK KC
