Name of firefighter who died of cancer added to Jefferson Square Park memorial
The community gathered on Monday morning to remember firefighters across Jefferson County who sacrificed their lives.
A memorial ceremony was held at the monument in Jefferson Square Park, where one more name was added to the list.
Sgt. David Pawley died of cancer caused by toxins he was exposed to while on the job.
He joined the Louisville Fire Department in 1996 and served with Leitchfield's department until his death last September at the age of 52.
"It's very gratifying and it's very nice to know that what he did didn't go unnoticed to show that everything that he gave his life for, the hours, all the training, the overtime, and everything he did to give his life," Pawley's son, Cameron Pawley, said.
The memorial ceremony coincided with Fire Prevention Week, in which local fire departments offer educational events, free home fire safety assessments and smoke detectors.
