There is no better time for a lifestyle overhaul than fall. While many of us are focused on the season’s wardrobe staples, cosmetics enthusiasts know a fall beauty routine refresh is equally as important. So away with the happy-go-lucky ease that defines summertime—enter the intentional, productive energy of the autumnal season.

And who better to provide a playbook for fall skin, hair, and makeup refinement than Vogue’s beauty director, Celia Ellenberg. “Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!” she expresses of her beauty approach as the seasons shift. “This is both an internal and external philosophy, really, as for me, the seasonal shift from summer to fall usually means dry lips and parched skin—as well as a packed schedule that requires as much water intake as possible to stay energized and healthy.”

Beyond optimal hydration, read on to learn more about Celia’s fall beauty ideology and the products she’ll be coveting—from a seasonless makeup essential to a frizz-fighting styling cream. How will you be transitioning your beauty regimen from summer to fall?

Concealer wardrobing becomes super-important for me this time of year, as my skin begins its sad transition from sun-kissed to sallow. That means breaking out a lighter shade of my go-to concealer (I vacillate between three shades during the year!)—and upping the ante on moisturizing skin care. I can get away with just a serum or a lightweight moisturizer in the summer, but layering those serums underneath a heavier cream during the day—and maybe even adding a sleep mask at night—is very important to combating fall dryness.

Are there any trends you’re looking forward to?

I pretty much stick to what works for me rather than what’s new on TikTok when it comes to my beauty routine (I’ve been #SkinCycling for years), but I do like to look to the runways this time of year for Halloween inspiration. I’m too busy/lazy to plan a proper costume, but a holiday-appropriate makeup look can go a long way, even with a T-shirt and jeans. This year, I will be channeling Pat McGrath’s incredibly cool and super-spooky Prada lashes for any festivities I’m invited to—kids’ parties included!

What are your must-have fall beauty products?

Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer SPF 27

This is a seasonless favorite of mine, but for inquiring minds who want to know: I have just bid farewell to the classic cream stick in Ochre, and from now to December, I will be relying on its slightly cooler Almond shade for all of my skin-correcting needs.

Nécessaire the Body Serum

I only have so much bandwidth for proper skin-care maintenance, which 99% of the time is directed above my neck. However, last fall, layering my usual body cream or oil with this serum was the only thing that successfully treated perennially chalky legs and arms. It has niacinamide and ceramides to help retain moisture, it absorbs really quickly, and it effectively preps the skin, so it’s ready for whatever you put on next.

Valmont Moisturizing Booster

I’ve tried a lot of serums with hyaluronic acid, which is a bona fide skin quencher, and this one is my favorite. I’m really specific about texture, and I love its lightweight gel with two different molecular weights of the powerhouse ingredient. It penetrates immediately, but you can feel it working for a while after application.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

I was recently in the Utah desert for a quick 48-hour trip, which was enough time for my lips to start flaking. A makeup artist I was with was kind enough to slip me a sample of this to assist me in my time of need. It’s packed with murumuru seed and shea butter and is meant to be used at night, so you wake up with pillowy-soft lips, but I’ve been using it in the morning, afternoon, and as needed.

Jones Road x Herve Claude Universal Hair Balm

There’s very little Bobbi Brown can’t do. So when she teased her new clean makeup brand’s first-ever hair-care product—a collaboration with her longtime hairstylist—I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. Unsurprisingly, it’s great. Without the summer humidity, my square bob can fall flat. But used on damp hair, this lightweight cream smooths the cuticles without weighing hair down and provides a little bounce too!

Designs for Health Adrenotone Capsules

I am not a naturopathic doctor, nor am I an herbalist. But I’ve been seeing the great Daniela Turley for almost a decade, and of all of the supplements she prescribes to help me balance out the unavoidable stressors of daily life, this one—which aims to help control a number of hormones that can impact your sleep, metabolism, and immune function—is the one she is most adamant I comply with. Mind your adrenal health for fall, friends! You heard it here first.
