BOSTON — The Red Sox have activated Eric Hosmer from the 10-day injured list. They also made three other moves.

Boston placed Rob Refsnyder on the IL with low back spasms, optioned righty Josh Winckowski and recalled lefty Darwinzon Hernandez.

Hosmer missed 38 games after being placed on the injured list Aug. 22 with low back inflammation.

Boston acquired him in a trade from the Padres at the trade deadline. He’s 9-for-40 (.225) with three doubles in 12 games for Boston.

Hosmer didn’t appear in any rehab games because the minor league season is complete. But he prepared by using a really expensive pitching machine at Fenway.

“We’ve got this machine. It’s like a simulator and what comes out is pretty similar to the stuff (of major league pitchers),” manager Alex Cora said Sunday. “For example, you put Gerrit Cole and the machine actually (simulates) the stuff based on his last start. So he’s been facing some good big league pitching the last few days.”

Cora said Hosmer might start Tuesday.

“The fact that he’s available, that means a lot to us,” Cora said.

Refsnyder batted .307 with a .384 on-base percentage, .497 slugging percentage, .881 OPS, six homers and 11 doubles in 57 games (177 plate appearances).

“Great season,” Cora said. “He was really, really good offensively, versatility. The quality of the at-bats were awesome.”
