A mobile app on a cell phone alerted the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office of a head-on collision Saturday morning on Old River Road near Lewis Nail Road, but sadly, both local women involved were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Around 8:09, Life 360, a smartphone app that utilizes GPS location tracking and alerts, notified Toombs County Dispatch of the accident. Moments later, another call came into the center from a person stating the same thing.

When deputies responded they found Caitlyn Emily Banks, age 17 of Hazlehurst, and Gail Gaines Myer, age 70 of Uvalda, both fatally wounded at the scene.

Captain Jordan Kight said it appeared from preliminary information that Meyer’s vehicle crossed into the lane in which Banks’ vehicle was traveling, causing the head-on collision.

The accident has been turned over the Georgia State Patrol Post 18 of Reidsville for further investigation.
