(Orange, MA) Update – Monday’s three-alarm fire on Mechanic Street in Orange began in the basement. It was caused by a malfunctioning hot water heater according to the Orange Fire Department. When the fire had initially been brought under control Monday afternoon, crews stayed to check for hot spots. This was when firefighters discovered fires spreading in the walls.

The building was built before fire stops were included in the walls and floors. This type of structure is called “Balloon Frame Construction” and left voids in the building where fire was able to spread. Firefighters discovered this fire, called in aid and eventually were able to get it under control later that evening.

(10/3/2022) The fire on Mechanic Street in Orange reached a third alarm, bringing in more mutual aid from surrounding towns. Most crews were able to leave the scene by 8:30 p.m., with a few remaining to check for hot spots and complete a fire watch. While crews were fighting this fire, another fire broke out a street over on Bacon Street, unrelated to the first fire.

No injuries were reported. Mutual aid was provided by Turners Falls, Warwick, Athol, Phillipston, Greenfield, New Salem, Northfield, and a Northfield ambulance. The Massachusetts Fire Marshall’s Office is assisting Orange Fire in the investigation.

*Update – 4 p.m.* Fire is actively at a second alarm level, according to the Orange Fire Department. The power in the immediate area of Mechanic Street will be shut off while crews are working.

As of 1:25 p.m. on Monday, there is an active fire on Mechanic Street in Orange. Orange Fire has responded and New Salem Fire, Warwick Fire, and a Northfield ambulance have been requested for mutual aid. Orange Fire is asking the public to seek alternative routes if traveling in the area. Updates to come as information is released.
