NOVI (WWJ) -- A drunk driver struck a tree this morning, resulting in the death of a young man who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.

Novi police received word of a one-car accident around 3 a.m. Monday morning. Officers were dispatched to Cranbrooke and Nilan Drive -- just south of 10 Mile, near Haggerty Rd.

According to Novi Police Commander Jason Meier, the car was headed southbound on Cranbrooke when it crossed the median and hit a tree with enough force to knock it over.

Arriving at the scene, officers found three people inside the car. While the driver's and passenger's injuries were not life-threatening, the third occupant was in much worse condition.

"The rear-seat passenger, a 24-year-old Novi resident, had some serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from those injuries," Meier told WWJ.

Meier also said that alcohol, along with speeding, was determined to be the main cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
