SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — The City of Salem is gearing up for the Salem Half Marathon, Virginia’s Blue Ridge 8K, and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Half Marathon and 8K will start at 8:00 a.m. The route will take runners through neighborhoods, Roanoke College, and the Roanoke River Greenway. The races will both start and finish at the Salem Farmers Market.

All runners in the Half Marathon and 8K will receive an official race shirt, a custom medal, chip timing, a Chick-fil-A sandwich, free race photos, and age-group awards. All runners 21+ will also receive a free beer coupon to be used at Olde Salem Brewery anytime over the race weekend.

The Kids Fun Runs will start immediately after the Half Marathon and 8K runners have passed. A two-mile run and one-mile run are being offered for those aged 4 – 12.

Virtual options are also available for all races. Participants must run on their own between Oct. 1 – Oct. 31.

Packet pickup will take place Friday, Oct. 7, at the Salem Farmers Market from 3 – 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 6:30 – 7:30 a.m. Virtual runners may pick up their packets at the Salem Parks and Recreation office starting on Oct. 11, or choose to have the packet shipped for an additional $5.

The event is rain or shine. However, wet weather doesn’t look to be an issue for the weekend. There will be a chill in the air with morning starting in the mid-40s Saturday.
