SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A woman and a teenager died following a Thursday morning apartment fire in Summerville.

Emergency crews responded to the Summerville Station Apartments around 3:00 a.m. where officials said multiple people were reportedly trapped in the fire at the time of the call.

“First crews arrived minutes later to find one apartment building fully involved with fire spreading to the next building and civilians in the front yard with burn injuries,” Town of Summerville officials said.

Two people were found dead in the response.

According to Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers, the victims were a mother and her son, identified as Freni Hazare (48) and Dhruv Chokshi (15).

They were taken to MUSC for autopsies.

A preliminary report is expected to be released soon. As of Tuesday, the case is still under investigation and the manner of death is still pending.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshals Office and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

The American Red Cross is helping people who lost their homes in the fire with basic needs, mental health counseling, financial assistance and spiritual care.

“They definitely need lodging and we provide them with financial assistance for temporary lodging. They also need clothing. They definitely need food,” said Bill Schmidt, a Disaster Action Team Volunteer with the Red Cross. “The community is a big help whenever they reach out and help out these families in these 36 units that burned.”
