We’ve never really seen a superhero movie born from and built around grief narratively. But, because of the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 from cancer, that’s exactly where “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has to start. Now Marvel has held the particulars back from audiences, but it’s clear from the first trailer and the images that Wakanda is in grief, mourning their King.

Directed and co-written by Ryan Coogler, the film not only looks like it explores grief, but a new geo-political threat as the world sees Wakanda on its knees and vulnerable without its king to protect its precious vibranium resources and advanced technology. That threat looks like it comes from the Marvel anti-hero Namor and the undersea Atlanteans (though known as the Talocans, in the movie). Marvel says specifically, “In the story, the Wakandans fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. The heroes must band together to forge a new path for the kingdom.”
‘Wakanda Forever’ stars Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M’Baku), and Tenoch Huerta (Namor). Also starring Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Florence Kasumba (Ayo), Dominique Thorne (Riri Williams), Michaela Coel (Aneka), Mabel Cadena (Namora), Alex Livinalli (Attuma) and Martin Freeman (Everett Ross), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is produced by Kevin Feige and Marvel’s Nate Moore, and hits the big screen on Nov. 11.

In Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba), fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda. Introducing Tenoch Huerta as Namor, king of a hidden undersea nation, the film also stars Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena and Alex Livanalli.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will be the final title of Marvel’s Phase 5. The film opens in U.S. theaters on November. 11, 2022. Watch the new trailer below.
