Subtle Shade? Beyoncé Pays Homage to Solange and Ends Caption with Cryptic Line

by Xara Aziz

Beyoncé paid homage to her singer and songwriter sister Solange Knowles online over the weekend for becoming the first Black woman to compose an original score at the New York City Ballet (Gianna Reisen’s Play Time) for the 10th Fall Fashion Gala at Lincoln Center. And some fans are speculating that one cryptic line in her post could be a dig at her husband and rapper extraordinaire JAY-Z.

In an Instagram post, the Renaissance star shared two photos of her sister: one with a huge grin on her face while holding two bouquets of flowers, the other, a candid shot of her waving to fans.

My beloved sister, there are no words to express the pride and admiration I have for you,” Beyoncé wrote in the caption. “You are a visionary and one of one. Congratulations on being the first African American woman to compose for the New York City Ballet. The piece you composed is phenomenal. I love you deep.”

She ended the caption with: “Might I suggest you don’t f*** with my sis.”

Some fans believe the “might I suggest you don’t f*** with my sis” is in reference to the infamous elevator fight at the 2014 Met Gala, where surveillance footage captured Solange attacking JAY-Z inside an elevator. In the three-and-a-half-minute video obtained by TMZ, Beyoncé is seen standing aloof while her security guard attempts to restrain her sister from the Empire State of Mind rapper.

No reports can confirm why exactly Solange attacked JAY-Z that day, although some speculate it was because he was getting a little too flirty with fashion designer Rachel Roy, who is also the ex-wife to JAY-Z’s former business partner, Damon Dash. The notorious fight has led to a series of conspiracy theories and has become one of the biggest moments in pop culture history.

“The most important thing is that our family has worked through it,” the Carters said in a joint statement shortly after the video leaked. “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family. The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

Solange, 36, was a former backup dancer for Destiny’s Child and has released four studio albums: Solo Star (2002), Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams (2008), A Seat at the Table (2016) and When I Get Home (2019).
