7News is celebrating 75 years on Monday!
In 1947, D.C.'s Channel 7 took to the airwaves on Friday, Oct. 3. It was the third D.C. station to sign on and the first Channel 7 in the United States. The station was owned by the Evening Star Broadcasting Company and it was known as WMAL TV.
WMAL AM and FM were sold to ABC in March 1977, and the call letters of the TV station were changed to WJLA-TV on June 6, 1977, representing the new owner, Joseph A. Allbritton’s initials.
On Monday, we'll take a trip down memory lane with a one-hour special featuring familiar faces from the 7News family throughout the years. We will also show incredible footage we discovered over months of scouring our archives.
Make sure to watch Monday at 8 p.m. on WJLA 24/7 News.
