A Tellico Plains area man, determined to have his internet installed, was arrested Oct. 1 after pulling a gun on the installer.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Ashley Chambers said she was sent to Green Cove Store on River Road about threats made with a gun and was told the man allegedly with the gun was at the store, wanting to continue the confrontation that had started at a house.
When she got to the store, Chambers said she talked to someone who said the man threatening him had left the store. He said he is employed by ViaSat and he went to John Dearmond’s home to install internet service.
The man said he discovered he couldn’t install the internet due to reception issues and Dearmond became upset and demanded he install it. The man said the conversation became heated and he told Dearmond he couldn’t install the equipment and went into the house to get his stuff.
He said while he was doing this, Dearmond appeared with a small hand gun and told the man to install the internet or he would shoot him. The man said he went ahead and installed the equipment even though it wouldn’t work.
The installer said while he was waiting at the store, Dearmond pulled into the parking lot, came into the store and demanded to talk to the installer. An employee of the store told him not to bring the problem into the store and demanded that he leave.
Dearmond refused at first, but after being told to leave again, he went outside and sat behind the installer’s van before putting a note on the van’s windshield and leaving. Chambers said the note told the installer to stop lying or he would take out an assault warrant on the installer for pushing him down.
Dearmond, 67, was found later and charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and false imprisonment.
