New England Patriots backup quarterback Brian Hoyer, who started in place of the injured Mac Jones, was taken to the locker room after being sacked Sunday by the Green Bay Packers in the first quarter.
Hoyer was sacked by Packers linebacker Rashan Gary and the team said he suffered a head injury. A few minutes after he was taken off the field to be evaluated, the Patriots said Hoyer was downgraded to out.
Hoyer was making his first start since 2020 and stepping in for Jones, who injured his left ankle last week in the Patriots' 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Prior to the injury, Hoyer was 5-for-6 with 37 yards passing.
Rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe went into the game to replace Hoyer.
Zappe, No. 4, was drafted in the fourth round in 2022. The 23-year-old Victoria, Texas, native is listed at 6 foot, 1 inch and 220 pounds. He played three seasons of college football at Houston Baptist and one season at Western Kentucky.
Zappe and the Patriots played well enough to force overtime, but Aaron Rodgers bounced back from a dreadful first half to continue his recent home mastery of AFC teams, beating the Patriots 27-24 in the final seconds of overtime.
Zappe was 10 of 15 for 99 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to DeVante Parker. The ball appeared to get snapped after the play clock had expired on Parker's touchdown, but no penalty was called.
Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said early Monday that Hoyer traveled back to Massachusetts with the team.
