A man was taken into custody following an officer-involved shooting and seven-hour standoff Sunday evening in the Los Altos area, police said.

Michael Eugene Amacher, 55, of Long Beach was arrested late Sunday afternoon on suspicion of multiple counts of assault with a firearm after barricading himself in a home in the 5200 block of E. 25th Street near Clark Avenue, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department.

Police were initially called to the scene at 10:13 a.m. on reports that a man pointed a gun at a relative and threatened to shoot them, according to the LBPD statement. It wasn’t clear what prompted that initial incident, LBPD Commander Byron Blair said Sunday afternoon.

When police arrived, officers saw Amacher’s relatives leaving the home and then began establishing a perimeter around the house, according to the LBPD. They then encountered Amacher at the rear of the residence holding a rifle, police said.

After police told Amacher to drop the rifle, he “refused to comply and surrender and pointed the rifle in the direction of responding officers,” according to the LBPD statement.

It was then that an officer shot at Amacher, but he was not struck by gunfire, police said. Amacher retreated into the home for several hours, police said.

Officers then requested the SWAT team and told neighbors in the immediate vicinity to evacuate and/or shelter in place, according to police.

Police negotiators then made contact with Amacher and initiated “de-escalation techniques for his peaceful surrender,” but he refused to leave the house, according to the LBPD statement.

At approximately 4:25 p.m., SWAT officers made entry into the residence and safely took the suspect into custody without incident, according to police.

Because Amacher suffers from pre-existing medical conditions, he was transported to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department before booking, police said.

Neither the suspect, LBPD officers nor any community members suffered any injuries during the incident.

The LBPD is in the process of reviewing body-worn camera footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible, police said.

A multi-level review of the incident is ongoing, according to police. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct its own independent investigation of the incident.
