VAN BUREN TWP. (WWJ) – A 31-year-old Saline man is recovering after being shot in the back while driving along I-94 late Saturday afternoon.

The victim was driving a maroon Chrysler Voyager van eastbound on the freeway near Haggerty Road around 5 p.m. when a driver in a black Ford F-150 fired multiple shots at him, according to Michigan State Police.

MSP officials say the victim pulled over on the shoulder near the scene of the shooting and called 911.

He had been shot once in the back and was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn and was said to be in stable condition.

The window on the victim’s sliding van door was shot out.

Authorities say the suspect fled the area, continuing east on I-94. The victim described the suspect as an Arab male.

It was not clear what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting or whether police are considering the incident to be a case of road rage.

MSP closed eastbound I-94 at Belleville for a shell casing search on Saturday evening, but it was not clear whether any evidence was found.
