Suspect killed in police involved shooting on Chicago's North Side
CHICAGO (CBS) – An investigation is underway after a man was killed during a police-involved shooting in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood Sunday morning.
The incident happened around 5 a.m. in the 400 block of West Blackhawk Street.
Neighbors who live in the Old Town area say they could hear the shooting clear as day.
Ingeborg Knook is pregnant and not getting much sleep, but Sunday morning the sound of gunshots really kept her awake.
"I turn to my husband, 'Oh they're shooting.' And then he was like, 'No it's fireworks.' But I was like, 'Uh uh, that sounds different,'" she said.
She heard more than a dozen gunshots.
"It's scary. So close by," she said. "Especially when you're pregnant and with a baby in the house. It's awful."
The shooting happened right down the street from Knook at the end of the alleyway on the northside of Blackhawk street between Hudson and Cleveland in Old Town.
"Officers on routine patrol were flagged down by a person who said someone had just pointed a gun at them," said Chicago Police Department Supt. David Brown.
Brown said that person gave a description of the suspect. Officers went looking for him and believed they found him. When they went to arrest him, he took off.
The officers chased him and he initially got away. The officers got back in their car and kept searching. They eventually found him again, and that's when police say an officer shot him.
"At the scene near the offender a weapon was found and there are casings, bullet casings from a gun not matching our officers," Brown said.
He said no officers were hurt, but one was transported to an area hospital for observation.
"I hope it gets a little bit more safe in this neighborhood," said Knook.
There are still a lot of gray areas about this investigation, such as how many times the officer shot the suspect and if the supsect fired at the officer.
CBS 2 spoke with police, who said they will have updated information on Monday.
The specifics of the incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, are being investigated by COPA with full cooperation from the Chicago Police Department.
The officer or officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
