A man faces several charges after Kanawha County deputies said an employee at a Subway store in Sissonville reported he jumped over the counter, slapped her in the face and damaged the digital credit card reader.
"As the call came in and the call was dispatched, deputies initially thought they were responding to a robbery or attempted robbery," Sgt. Ana Pile, spokesperson for the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office, said.
Luis Diaz-Chinchilla, 22, of Charlotte, N.C., was arrested Saturday following an incident inside the Little General convenience store on Call Road.
Deputies responded to the store and were told that a Hispanic male wearing a burgundy shirt had left the scene in a car going north on Interstate 77.
The female store employee at the Subway reported that the suspect had handed her 10 $1 bills, and she gave him two $5 bills. She told deputies the suspect was acting erratically, and she told him she was going to call 911.
"As she was going to go call 911 in the office, this male jumped over the counter, he slapped the female on the face, he caused damage to the phone that she was going to use, and in the process of him jumping over the counter, he then broke the credit card reader and damaged that as well," Pile said.
The suspect came back across the counter, where he attempted to hit a female Little General Store employee and then left the store, deputies said.
Officers were advised that members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office had detained the suspect after conducting a traffic stop on I-77.
"Our deputies went up and took custody of him, and then he was subsequently charged with assault, battery, and destruction of property, all of which are just misdemeanors," Pile said.
As for the two women in the convenience store, officials told Eyewitness News they have no serious injuries, and with the help of their quick thinking, deputies were able to make the arrest.
"Even after dealing with such a scary situation, they thought to get a good description of the vehicle and see its direction of travel, all of which was very helpful in resolving this issue very quickly and locating the suspect," Pile said.
