The most wonderful time of the year can also be the most stressful for parents, especially financially. However, the Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department is working to make sure Santa drops off gifts for kids across the region.
"We’re not always just fighting fires, we’re doing things for the community," Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department Chief Gordy Coleman said.
According to a study from Censuswide, 52% of parents are worried about how they will fund Christmas this year.
"We're trying to help them and the parents...give them some relief off their shoulders during the holiday season," engineer and firefighter Larry Coleman explained.
For the past 15 years, Santa has paid a visit to the Cedar Grove Volunteer Fire Department, bringing hundreds of neighborhood kids gifts including bikes, basketballs and Barbies.
"The (number of) average toys we try to give out is anywhere from 5,000 to probably 10,000, sometimes up to 15,000," Coleman said.
However, since prices have increased, the number of volunteers and donations has decreased.
"We used to have a lot of businesses that donated," Coleman told Eyewitness News. "We hardly get that anymore, so donations are down and have been down the last couple years, but it seems like we always get enough to always come through."
Firefighters plan to continue supporting youth in eastern Kanawha County and will start the toy pick up on Dec. 17.
"Our community needs to know what we do here at the fire station," Coleman added. "We don’t just always run ambulance calls and fight fires. We try to help different organizations. We go out and do things for our local school out here. We need volunteers."
