ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was hospitalized in serious condition after being shot multiple times Saturday at a youth football game in Ontario, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at around 10:45 a.m. on a football field at Colony High School, a spokesperson for the Ontario Police Department said.

The suspect or suspects fled the scene, the spokesman said. No description was available.

Police described the "non-school-sponsored event" as a Pop Warner football game. Whether the victim was a coach or spectator was not immediately clear.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation. In a tweet, the Police Department said the victim "was targeted."

"We don't know how many suspects may have been involved and we don't have a motive right now," said Ontario PD Ofc. Sequoia Payton. "It's unknown why the shooting occurred."

No other injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, the incident left some witnesses stunned.

"You could hear the gunshots from our house," said Dr. Felicia English, who lives nearby and spoke with Eyewitness News Saturday. "It didn't sound real and that's what made me question what did I hear."

Residents told ABC7 there were dozens of children at the game along with numerous visitors.

"Even the children who were there were exposed to trauma today and that is unfortunate," said English. "Really sad that this happened. It's a really safe community."
