Passengers looking to ride the MBTA’s commuter rail out of North Station better keep a frim grasp on their tickets.
Starting Saturday, the MBTA announced that their 30 new electronic gates are in effect at the station. Riders will need to tap their ticket to the gate in order to reach the train platform.
According to the MBTA, the installation is part of the organization’s Fare Transformation program. The program is designed to bring the Commuter Rail’s ticketing system to a closer resemblance of the T’s other models.
According to the MBTA, the gates are designed to accommodate large numbers of foot traffic and should not impact travelers outside of the barrier of entry to the train platform.
Riders will still be to use all existing methods of ticketing at the gates.
Nine of the gates will be wider; designed to accommodate wheelchairs.
The MBTA plans to add the gates to their South Station and Back Bay Station as well.
