Jacob deGrom served up three home runs in Friday’s loss to the Braves, and, somewhat surprisingly, the vast majority of callers phoning into Joe Benigno’s Saturday morning show the next day were eviscerating the Mets ace, who has struggled a bit of late.
DeGrom, so dominant after returning from his year-long absence, has battled a blood blister in recent games, but these callers were hearing none of it. These Mets fans sounded fed up with deGrom.
Here were some of the highlights:
Greg: “He’d go his six innings and strike out 13, but did they win the game? We hear it over and over after every pitch, ‘Oh, he’s thrown more first-pitch strikes in the first tinning than any pitcher in MLB history.’ A whole bunch of nonsense! It’s a disgrace! The people in the booth saw Seaver, they saw Koosman, you gonna tell me deGrom is the best pitcher in Mets history? It’s a joke.”
Rich: “Last night, he’s your guy, you get the run, he gives it up the next inning. If you’re a great pitcher, that doesn’t happen. And pitch the seventh inning. Goodness gracious.”
John: “Another hollow, double-digit strikeout inning. When you need him to go seven innings, he comes up small. I think he comes up small in the big moments.”
Jimmy: “You know what infuriates me more? People like your ex-partner who idolize this guy and think he’s the best pitcher in the world. This guy couldn’t sniff Tom Seaver’s jock. He couldn’t sniff Doc Gooden’s jock.”
