Joe Benigno can't believe Jacob deGrom pitched over Max Scherzer on Friday, says Scherzer is unquestionable ace

Joe Benigno has made it clear he is not Jacob deGrom’s biggest fan, and he was not happy after watching the Mets ace give up three home runs in Friday’s loss to the Braves.

Actually, Joe would push back on that statement, considering he doesn’t think deGrom is the ace of the Mets staff by any means. He says it’s easily Max Scherzer, who should have been on the mound in Friday’s pivotal series opener.

“Why the hell didn’t Max Scherzer pitch that game last night?” Joe said during Saturday’s show. “I am tired of hearing about Jacob deGrom…I want to ask Buck first. He was on regular rest, you had those two off days on Monday and Thursday, and that would have meant Scherzer pitched the first game of this series and the last game against the season against the nationals, which could turn out to be an absolutely monstrous game.”

DeGrom, battling a blood blister in his last two starts, has struggled of late, and Joe says it is no contest who the best starter on New York’s staff is, and who should be getting the ball in game one of a playoff series.

“You tell me right now: who’s a better pitcher, Max Scherzer or Jacob deGrom? I don’t even think it’s debatable,” Joe said. “In the biggest games of the year, look at what Jake has done. He spits the bit last week against the crummy Oakland A’s…against the Pirates, he’s coasting along…and in the sixth inning, he gives up a three-run home run to tie the game.

“He’s supposed to be the greatest pitcher on the face of the earth, and what does he do in the biggest game of the season?”
