78-year-old man dies after three-car crash in Cayuga County

Brutus, N.Y. -- A 78-year-old man died after a three-car crash on State Rt. 34 in Cayuga County Friday afternoon, deputies said.

David Adams, of Auburn, was pronounced dead at Auburn Community hospital following the collision in the town of Brutus, according to a news release from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 2:41 p.m., a 2016 Honda CRV, driven by 76-year-old Penny Adams, was traveling south on Rt. 34 when a 2016 Toyota Highlander slowed to take a left on Tanner Road, deputies said.

The Honda rear-ended the Toyota and then continued into the northbound lane of Rt. 34, deputies said. The Honda then collided with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee in the northbound lane.

Several people stopped to assist and render first aid immediately after the collisions, deputies said.

David Adams was sitting in the rear passenger seat of the Honda, deputies said. He was taken to the hospital where was later pronounced dead, they said.

Penny Adams, a front seat passenger of the Honda and both occupants of the Toyota were also transported to the hospital for treatment.

The driver and sole occupant of the Jeep was evaluated at the scene.

Deputies did not comment on the severity of the other injuries.

The accident is under investigation, deputies said. .
