The Yankees are facing yet another question mark in their bullpen heading towards the postseason, as Clay Holmes is dealing with a shoulder strain that will likely end his regular season.
Holmes, at one point one of the most dominant closers in baseball this season, has struggled since returning from an IL stint to address a back issue, received a cortisone shot on Thursday that the Yanks hope can have the righty ready for ALDS action.
“The first game in Toronto, that last inning, just kind of felt more than the normal soreness,” Holmes said. “I was able to pitch with it…but was in a spot where I didn’t feel like I would have been quite as effective in the next inning.
Nothing too worrisome, but where we’re at in the season and maybe the workload that’s coming, just wanted to play it smart and make sure it’s right before the postseason.”
Holmes said the injury is “nothing too worrisome,” and he is “very optimistic” that he will be ready for the ALDS.
