Domingo German ready for playoff bullpen role if Yankees need

Domingo German pitched around three walks to allow just two runs over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Orioles on Friday night, dropping his season ERA to 3.31 and his ERA over his last 10 starts to just 2.60.

Still, with a rotation trio of Gerrrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, and Luis Severino likely locked in for the postseason, Jameson Taillon could be the choice for the fourth starter, leaving German as the odd man out.

Could that set German up for a bullpen role in the playoffs?

“I haven’t had that kind of conversation with them,” German said through his interpreter. “But at the same time, I’m gonna be here for the team and ready for whatever it may be.”

German has pitched in relief once this season, tossing 1.2 shutout innings against the Brewers back on Sept. 16. German has had 14 relief appearances since 2018, and would be ready to take on that task if that is what is asked of him.

“Yeah, of course,” German said. “I’ve said it before, if I’m healthy, I have a really good chance of helping the team. whatever the opportunity has, I’m going to be there to help the team as much as I can.”
